I found a set of instructions on the Puppy forum on how to do this. Check out this link:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=16437#104453

I actually wanted to test this out before sending it your way. I could not find a spare usb key to do this. Please let me know how this goes.

I will let you know if I find a how-to for frugal install on USB. It should be pretty simple. If I cannot find, then I will write up something.

Well then, frugal it is. Thank you.

P.S. Is it possible to boot a frugal install from 2g/4g thumb drives? If so, is there a how to? My problem is the BGA chip failed or has bad connection on the laptop, and no legacy drives work, but usb drives are fine.

If you run Macpup as a frugal install, you can always keep a backup of your pup_save file to restore incase of such incidents.

Puppy installer worked great for me, until X got corrupted and I cannot fix it cuz when I mount the usb, the xorg folder of the usb becomes write protected and won't let me copy the the working cd version to the usb drive to fix it. Oh well I guess a fresh install every time this happens is the price we have to pay for the macpup goodness.

Not meaning to diss you or anything but the puppy installer is my preferred method of installation.

I would recommend staying away from Unetbootin , I have heard nothing but bad things about it.

To share info with all Macpup fellows.
Just discovered that Macpup can boot up
successfully on 2Gb and 4Gb thumb drive.
Do not need to create partition for
2Gb and 4Gb thumb drive.
Obtain free pup2usb : http://puppy.cnbits.com/software/pup2usb
For 8Gb and 16Gb usb thumb drive, still need to partiton
with 4Gb capacity to boot.
Conclusion : pup2usb can even work for FAT32 partition,
as compared to orginal puppylinux distro, limit
to 1Gb FAT16.
Not successful using Unetbootin (2Gb,4Gb,8Gb, 16Gb thumbdrive)
