Ok. I guess i thought 64 bit was a lot more common. Most of the major distributions do offer both 32 and 64 and I would be interested to know if there are foreseeable plans for the development of a 64 bit version. I would like to get the best out of my computer.

Thanks

Thanks runntt, I forgot to ask about if I can use the rest of the space in some chapter or something like that, but you already answered, thanks again.

And yes, when I put it of 2GB now it need more time for the boot, so with 50GB can need like a half hour LOL. Well, but with 2GB it boots ok ;)

2 Gb is plenty of space. Keep your savefile for your system stuff, Apps, things like that. Keep your photos, music , videos, and projects stuff outside the save file.If you only have one partition on the drive where the savefile is you can access all of your stuff in /mnt/home . The thing is the bigger the save file the longer it takes to load up and shutdown. I know people who have had save files 16 Gb or more and they need several minutes to boot.

Hi there, well, I'm a bit newbie in Macpup, I only used one Puppy Linux distribution some years ago, but the I took the decision to change from Ubuntu to Macpup, specially 'cause it's faster, lighter and more gorgeous.

So I made a Frugal install (I got some problems with Full), and made a savefile, but I only give to it some MB, and when I tried to install GIMP it said that I need more space, so I resized it to 2GB, but now I think that I probably need more space. So, is there a way that I can give to my savefile more space (Is the only savefile on the Netbook), for example, to 40 or 50 GB (The Netbook has 55GB).
I need to do a Full install?

The reason is simple, most computers in use around the world are 32 bit and will continue to be 32 bit for a long time to come. Most people can't afford to shell out the bucks/pounds/marks/rubles ects for a new 64 bit computer. It's all those "not so new" computers that are our target market. You can run macpup on computers that vista or 7 wont touch. Macpup gives those computers an up to date os with the latest browser without the cost of a new OS or Hardware.

Please excuse me if this topic has already been discussed but I have not encountered this in my searches. I say this because it seems obvious to me - what is the reason for macpup or puppy linux to continue developing in 32 bit? I have seen and used fatdog but I don't see much development with it. I'm so impressed with puppy linux that I would really consider making it my primary operating system but I don't understand about the 64 bit thing.

Macpup/puppylinux doesn't auto mount stuff like that. You can try the idrive panel but it isn't that good, every time you connect a new drive it refreshes and e thinks it has crashed. Search the puppy forum for it.

I use Firefox browser for doing this. First I go to

http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer11.html

and pick the

http://download.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flashplatformruntimes/flashplayer11/flashplayer11_rc1_install_lin_32_090611.tar.gz

I pick open with pupzip. Pupzip opens and at the top of the list is libflashplayer.so

Left click on libflashplayer.so to high light it in blue.
Hit the extract bar in toolbar in Xarchive.
Pick the Choose button.

On top toolbar it says select directory to extract to. Just explaining so you know what you are doing.
Maneuver down to usr and double click
Maneuver to lib and double click.

Now for the confusing part. There are 2 folders that contain libflashplayer.so in /usr/lib

1. is adobe-flashplugin
2. the other is mozilla/plugins

Me. Since I run AntiX and some other Linux distros. I put libflashplayer.so in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins folder as that is usually pretty much of a standard.

So I double click on mozilla folder next.
Then I double click on plugins folder.
Then I hit the open button in that window.
Next window shows file path /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins that the libflasplayer.so that you selected earlier will be extracted to.

Just hit the OK button and you are done.

Restart Firefox. Open a new Tab. Type in blank address bar

about:plugins

You should see

Shockwave Flash

    File: libflashplayer.so
Version:
Shockwave Flash 11.0 r1

Test Flash at

http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

Just to enlighten you a bit. The way I did this. libflashplayer.so also installed automagically in /usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin folder also

sh-4.1# cd /usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin
sh-4.1# ls
gecko-mediaplayer-dvx.so gecko-mediaplayer.so libnpjp2.so
gecko-mediaplayer-qt.so gecko-mediaplayer-wmp.so
gecko-mediaplayer-rm.so libflashplayer.so

Now to explain why. Because the /usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin folder is actually a symlinked folder that links with /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins folder.

So my gut instinct to do it the way I usually do things was right on the mark.

If wanting to go with Flashplayer 10 stable latest release instead. Go to

http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

and just follow my above steps.

Happy Trails, Rok

Howdy from the deserts of West Tx. This how to is done in the appreciation of runtt21's hard work in getting MacPup 5.28 ready for release. Just my way to say thanks. I hope my urls show up as links using standard bb code runtt21. If not. Can you edit my thread so they do. I am not HardKap proficient. Told you I would let you know if this would work. :)

First download PLOP zip from

http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanager.html#noinstall

I used Lighthouse Puppy Linux 5.01 to do this on my Amrel RT 786 Laptop. I know I told you runtt21 I run AntiX 8.5 core iso with LXDE on here. But guess what. I have 3 Hot Swap Hard Drive Caddies for this beast. I figured doing this in Puppy Linux vs AntiX may resonate better with Puppy users reading this. I don't run Windows normally. A Windows How to can be added by someone/anyone else in this thread.

Ok. Extract the zip with left click in rox file manager and select all and extract. You should end up with a folder. Right click on folder and pick Window>Terminal Here. My screenshot tells all on what to do next. Make sure you have a good floppy disk inserted in drive before entering commands in my screenshot.

http://oi51.tinypic.com/29lo8bq.jpg

this takes a few minutes to make. When done. Look in side of floppy disk to make sure all files are inside like I did. My MacPup bootable USB is also shown in screenshot.

http://oi55.tinypic.com/2i0db2u.jpg

If everything looks cool. Shutdown. Make sure Bootable USB and PLOP Floppy is inserted before power on. Make sure Floppy is selected as first boot in bios. On my Amrel. The Delete key accesses bios. Yours will vary when screen powers up initially (could be F2, F8,Esc, etc..)

When floppy boots. Pick usb from little blue menu

http://www.pendrivelinux.com/wp-content/uploads/PLoP-Boot-Manager.jpg

MacPup boot screen should come up next. I am using grub4dos on my Pendrive. Also. This Pendrive is MacPup 5.28 Beta due to be released when runtt21 is ready. This method of Booting a usb with a floppy works for me with a laptop that does not support usb boot from bios and is usb 1.1.

Finished product

http://oi54.tinypic.com/5dnsjp.jpg

EFM is not fully developed yet and it Doesn't play with puppylinux very well. It has caused us problems having two file manager in the os so we removed it. Doing that dose lock out the desktop. But this is macpup we don't want stuff on the desktop.LOL It is possible to add folders and drive icons like what you are talking about but they need to be added to a ibar on a shelf. Just set the shelf to invisible and the ibar look to plain and they will look like they are on the desktop. This thread will give you an idea of what you need to do. And ready through the e17 guide here.

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=63250

For a drive icon you would need to add a command to mount the drive before the line to have rox open there.

hello

hi

i'm using Enlightenment on MacPup 525. Lovin' it!

I see from your notes above, that the Enlightenment EFM module was removed.

Is there another way to put folder and drive icons on the desktop?

thanks!

This is cool even if they did 5.2. "Macpup: the small GNU / Linux with a big heart"

http://www.numango.com/5435_macpup-small-gnu-linux-big.html

I have also made a update for the install script in petget for macpup that handles the icon issue . So that when you install modules and other things in e17 that have .desktop files the icons don't get changed by the install script. Download the petget-update.tar.gz . Unpack it and follow the instructions in the folder to install. Its in the macpup 525 folder along with the extra modules update.

I have uploaded the first updates for macpup 525 to my macpup page. These install just like the other macpup updates. After you download them ,save them. Then use the exit menu to switch to jwm ( turns e off ) .Then install the updates. Wait a few seconds, then use the exit menu to switch back to e.

They are the Macpup525-update-01.pet and the Macpup-dev-update-01.pet if you have the Macpup-svn-full_DEV-01.pet already installed. I will have a updated set of extra modules tomorrow but the current one should still work.

You're the best. That explains it. Thank you very much. Macpup is working great on this old laptop, and I have already set a password in the bios. So someone unfamiliar with my system will need to get through that pw first. That's adequate, and the rest of the system is great.

I will read the article but don't plan to do anything fancy. macpup is fancy enough for me and for this old dell.

Macpup will also let me resurrect old laptops that others are ready to discard and put them to use with students and some that want to learn linux.

By the way, I do have several newer laptops and desktops but this old dell is not the only old thing around, besides myself, my single owner Toyota pickup was purchased in 1991, and still running well with a/c. And I had my weed-eater long before I bought the truck, and just used it today.

Thanks for your reply.

Puppylinux and macpup are very different from most of the main stream distro like Ubuntu or Fedora. We are not really set up for mulit users like Ubuntu. You can add users but you can't login to them at start up.You can only su to them from the terminal but only apps you run from that terminal will be under that user .The whole system dosen't change. We are set up to be a single user system. The only way to set up a real multi user system with puppy/macpup is to do a frugal install with a different save file for each user. The only real danger (and this has been discussed for years at the puppy forum) is user error. You can mess your system up if your careless but as far as someone from the outside jacking with you.... very unlikely.

Here is how to set up a login at start up. You would need to do this in each save file. It is also possible to add a password to grub and grub4dos...

Fairly new to Linux. Have been using Ubuntu for a few years, but not super technical. Found mac-pup and loaded it on a 10YR Old Dell laptop and it is running great. Really like a few of the apps that are not on Ubuntu, Love the light weight / low resource requirements. This PC now basically becomes a net-book, without wireless though. There is only 1 USB port and it is USB1. Thanks for doing this distribution now the quick question.

How do I set up log-in that allows/requires user log-in and I know how to set up users, but logging in as root without a password is a little insecure. I'm sure there is an article somewhere but though Google is my friend, it keeps sending me to Microsoft sites even though I put Macpup and Linux in the search string. Thanks in advance for any help.

Haven't had time yet to try out the new MacPup 5.25 yet. I am also involved as a moderator and team member with AntiX. Still have my MacPup 5.2 installs going strong. Even built my own pets for pianobar and jitsi out of Debian Sid package binaries. I am hoping to get another 9 inch netbook for testing purposes today, (if things go right), with a atom processor and water proof key board with a sata platter drive.

Posting here to test hardcap as requested. Login acts strange like I was being looped back to login.
Tried a trick I know using the tab key to high light login button and use the space bar to push it in to log in. Did not make a difference. Will see if this post goes through. If so. The login section of site is fooling users into thinking they are not logged in.
