Prit And I are proud to announce the release of Macpup 528,our newest
e17 Macpup.

Macpup is a small, light OS. The .Iso is only 164 MB.
It runs in ram and is very fast. It is not a striped down,
bare bones, basic core OS. Macpup is a full featured system
right out of the box with apps for office, graphics, multimedia, internet
and much more. And it looks really cool.

MP528 is based on Puppy Linux 5.2.8 ,"Lucid Puppy", An official woof
build of puppy Linux that is binary-compatible with Ubuntu Lucid Lynx
packages.MP528 contains all the apps from Lucid puppy with the addition of
Firefox 7.01 beta. Extra apps like Opera or Gimp are available for easy
download from the Quickpet App on the ibar or the Puppy Package Manager.
MP525 also includes the Enlightenment E17 window manager. The EFL libraries
version 1.0.999 and E17 version 62861 where compiled and installed
from source.

All included E17 themes are By Verdegal37 and where customized for
Macpup by CatDude and Runtt21.

Thank's to everyone that has help or supported the Macpup project:
Ttuuxxx, CatDude, Puppyluvr, Mu, Sneekylinux, Rasterman and all Of the
E17 crew, ZaZoOo, WhoDo, Omskates, Cgt_1991. Joel, Russoodle,
GrumpyWolfe,Maxpro4u, Rokytnji & 01miko.

Extra Thanks to Agust(Verdegal37), The best E17 Themer on the planet.
And Sakasa for the Default theme backgrounds .

Special Thanks to BarryK the creator of puppylinux. And PlayDaze the
developer of Lucid puppy.

http://www.macpup.org
http://hardkap.net/forums/
http://puppylinux.org/
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/index.php

09/10/11 John Lee aka Runtt21

To keep your CPU cool and your fan quiet use the CPU Frequency Scaling
Tool . Menu-applications-system-CPU frequency Scaling Tool

The first time you run Macpup, The system will be running totally in RAM!
Click on Htop on the ibar to check working space left in RAM*. If less than 30MB,
do not run big apps like Firefox -- instead, shutdown Macpup and you will be
asked to create a save file, that will give you more space. You can put the
save file almost anywhere,Hard drive,USB Flash drive,Sd card.Etc...
I recommend 256 MB total system ram for Macpup. You can also check ram by adding
the systray module to the Ibar. Click on the Top Hat on the Ibar to adjust most
system settings. Access the settings panel to make adjustments to e17.
Menu-settings-settings panel or the settings icon on the right end of the Ibar.

Updates for Macpup 528 can be found at http://macpup.org/runtt21/ in the macpup 528 folder,
as well as extra modules and more themes. Please note that macpup is for PC's and
not intended for use on a real "Mac"

the default theme:

the extra theme:

Important note about themes, All of the mp525 themes should work in
mp528.

This version of Macpup will boot to desktop in almost all cases and
from that screen you can make adjustments if they are needed or
wanted. The desktop and clock should be correct. If it does not boot to
a graphical screen, it might boot to a “prompt.” If that happens
please enter ‘xorgwizard’ which will allow you to configure Macpup. If
it does not boot to a prompt but a black screen, then you should
reboot the CD and press f1 and enter ‘puppy pfix=nox’, in the space
that asks for any boot options. Then at the prompt enter ‘xorgwizard’.

If you connect to the internet by Ethernet As soon as the desktop
comes up you will be online please click on the top hat on the ibar
and run the firewall wizard.

I have downloaded Macpup and now I am trying to burn the ISO to a disc, but once I've used the program to burn the ISO it says it has been completed. Then when I enter the disc back into my drive to get a prompt of some sort to install Macpup nothing happens. I do not know if it is even burnt. I think it may be burnt, because I cannot open the disc or anything. Any suggestions on what I am suppose to do? I've also tried restarting the computer then putting the disc in at the screen where it gives options to go to menu F12 and some other options. Suggestions appreciated!

I have a MAC G4 PPC, os 10.5.8, 2 gigs ram, 1.25 Ghz single processor, and it works very well.<font class="Apple-style-span" face="Helvetica">The system is not recognizing the cd. I had an older version of macpup open about a year ago. The machine works well, but I noticed on the startup menu, the cd is not recognized either. I installed a new hd drive to be the main boot drive, and did a fresh install of the os. Other than that, nothing was done except maintenance.</font>
<font class="Apple-style-span" face="Helvetica">I can boot into open firmware. If anyone has any ideas, please tell me. The machine is in excellent condition but is still a ppc, not intel. I really need this to work. In the past, I could run Ubuntu, or Macpup. I do not know why it is not running now. I have an entire hd dedicated to a linux distro. Thanks in advance.J</font>

I was trying to get the SFS Dev and Openoffice files to load. I downloaded them to waht I thought was the /mnt/home directory but when I load the Bootmanager configuration utility it always throws up the following error:

" Sorry, there are no SFS files in directory /mnt/homw (or they all have the wrong '*_nnn.sfs' version number) You will need to download and place on there first."

I am baffled. I have sought out the latest Lucid SFS files from ibilio and I think I've been putting them in the right place....help!! I'm at my wits end.

I wonder how I can activate the lovely transparency feature for which Enlightenment is so famous? It would really be great to have this in MacPup!!

BTW - are you thinking of doing a Multi-user of MacPUP based on PizzasGoiod 4.3.1 Puppy R3 ? I have lots of small kids and it would be very handy.
Cheers

First of all you should know that I'm quite a newbie using Linux and I'm really not a terminal expert...
I've got a handful of experience with Ubuntu, but that's it.

Recently I'm running the latest Macpup 528 on a Acer Travelmate 7510 Notebook because it's fast and suitable for tendious tasks. There's also installed Windows 7.
Compared to Windows 7 the Notebook gets exceptionally hot running Macpup. The temp gadget talks about 60° C though the Notebook runs in idle or does light tasks such as text editing.
Using Windows 7 the fan only runs when there are heavier tasks but with Macpup it even runs idling.

Has anyone an idea how to fix the problem?

Thanks a lot,
Dominik

This is my guide for installing both java and flash.

This is the method I use because some of the java.pets of sfs files dont always work.

First make a /usr/java folder.

Then go to this page and download and save the Linux self extracting file it's 20.6 MB

http://java.com/en/download/linux_manual.jsp?locale=en&host=java.com

Then use geany to copy down these instructions so you can close firefox.

Now move the jre-6u30-linux-i586.bin you just downloaded into /usr/java

Open a terminal in /usr/java and run:

chmod a+x jre-6u30-linux-i586.bin

The name of the bin should change color from black to red in rox.

Now run:

./jre-6u30-linux-i586.bin

Let it do it's thing. When it finishes it will say "done" in the terminal.

Now run :

cd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

And then run:

ln -s /usr/java/jre1.6.0_30/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so

That's it. Now open firefox and run about:plugins in the address bar and see if java is listed down at the bottom

In the macpup528 folder on my macpup page I have a Macpup-jre-control.pet that will add a menu entry for the java control panel.

To run java web start apps you need to link javaws from /usr/java/jre1.6.0_30/bin into usr/sbin. Then you can make a script to run javaws to the web site with the web app. For example I use this script to run the cgoban client for the KGS go server,

#!/bin/sh

javaws http://files.gokgs.com/javaBin/cgoban.jnlp

If you can download the .jnlp file you can run it to like this script I use to run the Jago client.

#!/bin/sh

javaws /root/working/jago.jnlp

I'm on macpup 528 and have installed java from various sources: quickpet, sfs and java doesn't work. Most lately, I've downloaded jre-1.7.0-20110811.sfs put it into /mnt/home, added it to bootmanager so it will load upon reboot. I have googled the problem so as not to waste other's time but to no end. I've tested it on three browsers as well. Thanks for your help.

I wanted to find out if there is a way to remove the problem of being locked out of my external hard drive where I have my Macpup save file. I can not access the drive from other linux programs (I tried Nimble) or on my Windows computer.

I can't delete the Macpup save file or move it when I'm on Macpup- I get messages like

"Error: Input/Output error... Done... There was one error"

when I try.

I can mount the drive in Macpup only, and get access to the files.

When I'm on Windows, trying to access the drive and its contents, I get a message about the drive being corrupted or unreadable. I have Windows XP and the USB hard drive is NTFS type file system.

I'm not an expert on Linux and might need some detailed instructions on de-activating the encryption to regain access to the drive when I'm in Windows.

Thanks for any assistance.

I have been using linux for like 4 years now, so I can say I am not a total noob. While I have tried my hands on many distros (which includes a 2 year old version of puppy for some file recovery work) my primary OS has been either Ubuntu or Arch. The thing I love most about ubuntu is that it has packages for all the things I want. But as Ubuntu is developing, it is losing backwards compatibility to my old machine which uses Intel graphics. It has forced me to move away from Ubuntu, so I don't have to pray to god so my Xorg will work. I cannot go back to Arch because its just too much work in maintaining it.

The very first idea that came to my mind was to install a minimal distro, and with that the instant recollection was of puppy linux with its minimal GUI and it bloody worked on my intel graphics. I have two questions,

1) Does it still work on the onboard intel graphics that comes with pentium 4?
2) I know puppy is a minimal distro, but I cannot live without the latest version of gcc, firefox, thunderbird, skype and pidgin. I also need to use wine from time to time. I can take care of install qucs and a torrent client. Is puppy still capable of this?

Thanks in advance

Hi there, well, I'm a bit newbie in Macpup, I only used one Puppy Linux distribution some years ago, but the I took the decision to change from Ubuntu to Macpup, specially 'cause it's faster, lighter and more gorgeous.

So I made a Frugal install (I got some problems with Full), and made a savefile, but I only give to it some MB, and when I tried to install GIMP it said that I need more space, so I resized it to 2GB, but now I think that I probably need more space. So, is there a way that I can give to my savefile more space (Is the only savefile on the Netbook), for example, to 40 or 50 GB (The Netbook has 55GB).
I need to do a Full install?

Hi, for the last couple of days firefox has been really slow for me. Earlier if was going fast and smooth.

Anybody has any idea why this might be?

I have a possible explanation: The last days I have downloaded a lot of movies, and deleted them after watching them. Is there a possibility that they might be stored in a trash bin somewhere? I read that "delete" on puppy linux deletes files completely... but maybe this is the explanation. If so, where can I search? I have tried to locate a trash can, but so far I haven't found anything...

First off i really like the distro :)

My issue is with MacPup on my Toshiba NB255 netbook, i ran it live off a thumbdrive using Yumi, i just had to rename the distro for Yumi to see it. all went fine booting live everything on the netbook was working great ,i decided to install, made a partition with GParted and installed the distro as well as GRUB, rebooted and all was well UNTIL I ran the wizard to config the mouse-touchpad, the touchpad worked on the live and also worked until i ran the wizard. it seems no mater what i do i just cant get this thing to function, the pad works but tapping just quit working, this may be a dealbreaker for me, i gotta get this thing fixed, its driving me nuts!

Next issue is my usb wireless adapter, the internal Atheros works fine, but my Alpha AWUS036H is a problem, i know this is a issue with many distros but it seems it is loading the correct driver, it works out of the box on Backtrack (for obvious reasons if ya know what this adapter is famous for )and i also had no problems with it on PC-Linux live disk, Im hoping to resolve this issue with MacPup because Im getting ready to install BODHI on my brand spankin new HP G62-340us notebook that i got for the unreal price of $279 US, i know the issue with the adapter will likely be the same with that install as well, so i would like to solve it now with my MacPup on the netbook, like i said i know there are known issues with certain distros and this adapter, some fixes are available, my question is does anybody on this forum have a easy fix?

Love the distro! My netbook is BLAZING fast, gonna test drive the dual boot for a few weeks and the decide if im gonna dump Windows 7 all together and just run MacPup and maybe another small distro on the netbook, but not until i get the touchpad tapping issue resolved.

And just to introduce myself I'm a huge Charles Bukowski fan and i live on the little island known as Key West.... aka Paradise :)

Please excuse me if this topic has already been discussed but I have not encountered this in my searches. I say this because it seems obvious to me - what is the reason for macpup or puppy linux to continue developing in 32 bit? I have seen and used fatdog but I don't see much development with it. I'm so impressed with puppy linux that I would really consider making it my primary operating system but I don't understand about the 64 bit thing.

Prit And I are proud to announce the release of Macpup 525,our newest
e17 Macpup.

MP525 is based on Puppy Linux 5.2.5 ,"Lucid Puppy", An official woof
build of puppy Linux that is binary-compatible with Ubuntu Lucid Lynx
packages.MP525 contains all the apps from Lucid puppy with the addition of
Firefox 4. Extra apps like Opera or Gimp are available for easy
download from the Quickpet App on the ibar or the Puppy Package Manager.
MP525 also includes the Enlightenment E17 window manager. The EFL libraries
version 1.0.999 and E17 version 59456 where compiled and installed
from source.

And Louis King Jr. for the backgrounds .

Special Thanks to BarryK the creator of puppylinux. And PlayDaze the
developer of Lucid puppy.

Updates for Macpup 525 can be found at http://macpup.org/runtt21/ in the macpup 525 folder,
as well as extra modules and more themes. Please note that macpup is for PC's and
not intended for use on a real "Mac".

The .iso is 155 MB

http://macpup.org/macpup525.php

the default theme:

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j106/runtt21/MPBlue6.jpg

Important note about themes, All of the mp511 & mp520 themes will work in
mp525.

Video demo by Sneekylinux:

Macpup forbeginner: Automatic (security) updates, Installation of Bluetooth Mouse
Hi there,
first, thanks for macpup, works great when booting from a 4GB USB stick.
I'm rather a linux/macpup rookie, so it's ok if you point me to any further reading ;), I sure missed some basics.
My use case would be to use macpup for internet banking by using macpup for exactly this purpose only, hoping that it doesn't get poluted by any malware or the like.

However, I'm looking for some additional things and answers
- I encrypted my personal save file with hard encryption. Are there any opinions how safe my USB stick now is (e.g. are stored passwords and data really safe or can they be hacked rather easily if I lose my USB stick)
- Is there an automatic update function in macpup to always get the latest fixes (assuming there are such as in every software :) ) as a really dumb user a tray Icon saying like 'your make pup is up to date' would be cool and very assuring...
- are there any good virus scanners etc to be used in macpup
- how can I configure macpup/grub(?) such that it can not access the hard disks on the notebook I'm running it on by any chance?
- nice to have: how can I use my logitech BT mouse, hci devices don't seem to exist at all.

Thanks !

It's me again. This time I hope my question is not so foolish.
My Macpup (JWM) system is set in every way I know how to UK - time, language, keyboard etc. The /etc/keymap file reads UK but I still get @ for " and vice versa.
Anyone else experienced this?

Hi,
I have installed MacPup 525 on the first partition of my HD. Crunchbang is installed om the second partition. Grub 2 is used by Crunchbang to boot the system. I need a boot script to use for the menu entry in Grub 2 so I can boot MacPup. Something happened the other day and eliminated the Macpup entry from the boot menu. Macpup is still installed but I cannot boot into it. Any Help ??
